We just received our replacement fuser/maintenance kit. I installed everything (and have since double checked the fuser), but I'm still getting the fuser error. The printer was streaking before the fuser error, so I was already thinking it was a bad fuser. I have replaced a fuser before, with no error then. How do I convince it that it has a new (replacement) fuser?

The 50.1 error clears itself automatically, so if you're still seeing the 50.1 error, that means the new fuser has not fixed the problem ...
You didn't mention which model printer: if this is a LaserJet 8100/8150 printer, this problem is actually the low voltage power supply (see http://www.printertechs.com/tech/assemblies/8100LVPS.php)
On other printer models, like the LaserJet 4100, this can be a DC controller issue ( another possibility is you got a second bad fuser...)

I haven't seen a 50.1 in a while. I do remember that one had to wait about 30 minutes before powering up the printer, in order for the caps to discharge and clear the error.
Is that still true?

Sorry, the printer is an 8150. :o
And it was off over night, and still gives the error, so it is not an issue of giving it a little time.
But it will be a little more challenging figuring out if it's a second bad fuser, or more. My inclination is to question the fuser, just because of the streaking I was getting before the replacement part. I'll try to pull the fuser from a working machine and see what happens.
Thanks.

The fuser works fine in another machine, and the fuser in the other machine does not solve the problem.
*Sigh*
Thanks for the link. I've started the process to order the next part. (Of course, I work for a State college, so it will be forever before I get it, but...at least it should work next time.)

After you replace the fuser, you are waiting overnight before powering on?

It should be the low voltage power supply ... this is the error I would say 95% of the time on these 8150 machines ... also, it could be that Both are an issue: your old fuser was causing the streaking, and a failling power supply is now giving you this 50.1 error ... the timing is coincidental and actually happens all the time ... so if I was you I wouldn't necessarily assume the old fuser is good, but I would get a power supply..

I sometimes believe 50 service problems start from either the fuser or the low voltage power supply.
I havent encountered a 50 service problem in a long time.
I would say in this case that the power supply needs replacement.
If the fuser is working fine in another unit, then its power supply that is faulty, I always suggest that have a test bed printer of the same models you work with, is always a good idea, it helps with troubleshooting, it also helps not to disturb a working printer, that you use for administration / office work.

Every machine has its own weakness. There is a weakness with the 8100/8150 series LVPS. HP did upgrade them in the newer ones. My thinking is that it gets overheated due to the fans getting clogged up with dirt/dust. I try to perform regular maintenance on them and make sure to blow out the fans when I do. It has reduced the amount of problems I've had.
You dont have to wait 30 min on these machines. Only have to do that on the older HP's (ie...HP 4/4+/5/4V/4MV/IIISI/4SI/II/III/IIP/IIIP). I usually carry a LVPS & Fuser when I go out on the 8100.
