Hello all,

I have an HP8100 printer. The fuser starts to smell like burning plastic  ; though it has printed about 150k shts(not for maint. yet). Has any of you guys ever experienced something like this? Please let me know what it is.

Thx,
Hai

Replace the fuser. It's cheaper than a printer on fire setting off the building fire alarms.

Thx for your advice Redcow, but I just thought there's another way to salvage this thing instead of changing it.

The burning smell is caused by loose chippings coming off the fuser roller, you can replace it but the price of refurbished fuser units is so low that replacing the whole unit is the best solution.

Yeah, I got new maint. kit in so everything is ok now, but still hope to find out what exactly went wrong though.

Thanks all for your help.

Have you looked at the fuser closely?
I think you'll find some loose metal powder.

The recommendation of life cycle for the HP8100 is 350,000 before replacing in normal condition. This one is not even half way yet and only printed with quality laser paper. I have 10 8100's and 2 8150's, none of them in the past had such problem until this one. No transparencies have been printed in the printers either. In reply to one of the replies above, I changed 2 sensors, bulbs, thoroughly cleaned inside out, no peeling on upper or lower drums, no indications of cable connectors being burned or whatsoever. BUT, there is one thing, IT'S SQUEAKING. I at first thought that was the problem. But then I emits order even when the printer is not printing. Finally, I replaced it with a new maint. kit.

Thx,
Hai

The remans use a cheap heat roller that really does stink! I get them occasionally, but we use so many vendors for parts it's not always.
4+ & 4's and 5si's get it too.
