I have installed a maintenance kit in a Laserjet 4000. They were complaining that they had a problem with paper jamming all the time. I though the maintenance kit would help. However there appear to be several bits of paper inside the printer that I can't get to. I'm a little leary of taking too many things apart. The paper picks up ok but then gets jammed before it reaches the opening where to toner is.
Can anyone help?

You have pieces of paper stuck in the paper path behind the manual feed tray assembly.
Take out the toner. open the MFT door. Right above the feed roller you see an arrow pointing towards you. Grab with thumb and forefinger the two plastic thingees on both sides of the arrow and pull straight out.
Leave the top cover open. To the right of the aforementioned feed roller is another arrow. as you look down thru the open top cover, with your thumb push down and forward on that arrow. That should give you a better view of the paper path. If you don't see and paper scraps...you need someone to remove the MFT assembly to remove any paper or possibly adjust the pre-feed sensor.

Sometimes canned air helps with this...
sometimes running a thick piece of paper through the MP tray helps also...

Can I remove the MFT assembly myself or do I need to get someone to do that? Are there instructions?
Actually, I tried running a transparency through the MFT and that went through OK. So the jam is before that part of the path from tray 2.

Not too too hard...not like changing the engine controller board. Here's your instructions (doing this from memory so someone correct me if I'm wrong).
-remove cartridge - unplug printer
-remove formatter cover - slide to the back and remove
-open rear door
-remove 4 screws securing top cover (2 in front & 2 in back) - using needle nose pliers detach gear drive release arm from top cover
- release tab on right front side of top cover
-lift top cover left side first, disconnect display panel connector, and remove
-unhook mp tray door by GENTLY pulling the guides to the right and left to release mp tray from door, then slide mp cover to the right to remove
-disconnect flag holder (left side of tray 1 p/u asm), by lifting up and out
-push mp tray down and release claw on left, slide to the left to release pin and remove
- remove left and right side covers (note: when reassembling right cover make sure the power switch is connected to the metal arm or you get no power when you try to switch it on.)
-disconnect solenoid connector (right side) and sensor connector (left side) of tray 1 p/u asm.
-remove 2 extra long black screws from tray 1 p/u asm - located in the top of the tray 1 p/u asm on either side
-remove 5 black screws from front of the tray 1 p/u asm and remove (note how solenoid cable goes through the printer frame for reassembly)
- your jam should be behind that tray 1 p/u asm - check feed asm for worn rollers, blow out and clean it real good.
- reassemble in reverse order
Wish you success, please put note if works good as some of us like to know we actually helped someone. :)

jodythayer, are you a printer tech?
If you are then you'll understand what prntrfxr wrote and have it.
If you arn't and you try to do what he wrote, you are going to have a pile of different sized screws and plastic parts that will be ready for your local landfill.

This actually sounds like it may be a paper feed roller ... this is a "hidden roller" back behind the MP Tray that wears out / clutch fails...if this is the case, just clearing out bits of paper will not solve this problem... you probably need to have this roller replaced... this is NOT considered a user-serviceable part...
You probably will want to have a technician come in for repair ...
