HP Driver decisions

Briefly explain the differences in drivers - PCL, PCL6, PCL Series. Is there a general rule that pervades in deciding which is necessary?

HP has technical documents on their site about printer control languages. Usually we go with the most recent driver, but not always. I've found situations like the LJ 4+ drivers weren't written to correctly handle the optional lower cassette, and the 4si driver works better on the 4+ in that regard. I've also had better luck with HP drivers than Microsoft drivers. Also postscript drivers sometimes work better than PCL drivers. Sometimes you just have to test.
