5P paper pickup problem

My trusty 5P won't pickup paper from the tray and even manual feed will not work. Is this a common failure mode? Can anyone point me towards the likely cause?

If both the tray and the manual feed don't work it looks like the motor has packed in, or one of the gears is broken, what sounds do you hear when you want to print?
