No matter what we do the printer keeps looking for Tray one and is asking for paper, etc. This occurs even if close the Tray. We have reset to factory, etc. We can force Tray 2 to work in a Test mode.

1st - check if tray 2 and 3 lift the paper in the trays (you can open little door in front to see tray 2 lift. you can take out tray 2 and see tray 3 lift)
Check also to see if the printer tries to p/u paper or whether you get the error code immediately)
2nd - make sure printer configuration for trays is correct
3rd - bad Tray 1 P/U asm - RG5-1880
4th - bad PIU

hope this works for you:)

Check the paper size settings in Tray 2....make sure it is set for "Letter", or whatever size paper you are trying to print...if it's not, it will always try to pull from Tray 1...

Is this a network printer? The print server settings can over ride the local settings on the printer.

Can you run "paper path" test from each of the trays?
