We have a LJ4100 that continues to post an error message...
'Non-HP toner cartridge detected', even though it is a C8061A cartridge. I've tried two other cartridges just to make sure but I always get the same message. I also tried doing a cold reset but that didn't help either. After you press the green Go button, the printer works fine. I ran a configuration page and everything looks normal except the two lines that say Formatter Number, and Printer Serial Number. Below is what is listed...

Formatter Number: S46XXXXXXXX
Printer Serial Number: XXXXXXXXXX

Anyone have any ideas, or suggestions?

You can get the serial number on the back of the printer. The formatter number 'may' be printed on the formatter itself. It's easy to pull out on the 4100. You'll need to be in service mode to set the numbers. Setting them 'may' help.

Can we assume that your cartridges have the HP logo on them?
The following is from HP.

NON HP TONER
DETECTED
alternates with
PRESS GO TO
CONTINUE
The printer has detected
that the toner cartridge is
not a genuine HP toner
cartridge because it does
not see or recognize the
toner cartridge’s
identification (model,
manufacturing date, and
serial number).
1. Make sure the toner cartridge
is a genuine HP toner cartridge.
A non-HP toner cartridge will
produce this error. Any printer
repair required as a result of
using non-HP toner is not
covered under the printer
warranty.
2. If the HP toner cartridge is
new, the Elabel (cartridge
memory) is missing or has been
tampered with. If you believe the
toner cartridge is a fraud, call the
HP fraud hotline at
(1) (877) 219-3183 (toll-free in
North America).
3. If the HP toner cartridge is
used, the printer will not
recognize the cartridge until 20
pages have been printed. After
20 pages have been printed, the
error message disappears.
4. If the HP toner cartridge is
used, and the error message
remains after 20 pages have
been printed, the cartridge has
previously run out of toner.
Replace the toner cartridge.

I was wondering if the two problems might be connected, that's why I included the info on the config sheet.
After several bad experiences with refilled cartridges from other companies, we try to purchase HP toner cartridges only. So, yes they are HP toners and one was new out of the box.

the toner reader sensor went bad.
Use a dos box with PJL commands to change the #'s.
Put in "set formatternumber" where the words "set serialnumber" is after doing the serial #. Connect with a parallel cable.
Run a command prompt, and at "C" type "edit serial"
Hold Ctrl, and press "p", release, and hit Esc.key. You will get an arrow.
Type %-12345X@PJL SET SERVICEMODE=HPBOISEID, ENTER.
TYPE{no arrow} @PJL SET SERIALNUMBER=XXXXXXXXX{NUMBER} ENTER.
TYPE{no arrow} @PJL SET SERVICEMODE=EXIT ENTER.
DO ARROW,TYPE %-12345X [DO NOT PRESS ENTER}
SAVE AND EXIT.
AT C, TYPE copy serial lpt1 {lower case}

I dont know about the message you're getting, but if you have entered the serial & formatter number so that it reads on the config page. Then you turn it off and back on and print a config page. If the serial number disappears again you either have a bad firmware chip in the formatter, bad formatter, or both firmware chip and formatter bad.

formatter issues are frequent with these machines.

C4169-67901 Formatter - (regular type not for multifunction machines > MFP)
C4168-67903 Firmware - (reg not for MFP)

Hope its not this.
