Scan without ink - Canon Pixma MP160

Hi, I have a Canon Pixma MP160, it comes with a built in scanner. Everytime, i try scanning it will say that the printer is busy. I left it for 2 hours and still says its busy. However, once i insert the ink, it works fine. Is there a way to scan without putting the ink. Thx
