View Full Version : LJ4200 Fuser change--erratic paper handling

Last week I installed one of the PrinterTechs replacement fusers in a 4200 with about 180,000 pages or so on it. The fuser film was shredded a little differently than I had seen before but wasn't going to fix itself...so I looked for an alternative, and decided to try the PrinterTechs metal film replacement.

I bought a maintenance kit with the fuser and replaced a bunch of rollers including the transfer roller.

When I fired up the printer again I found that I couldn't get much of anything to print reliably. Generally I would get a 13.05.00 error and the paper wouldn't proceed into the fuser from the cartridge area.

I could usually print plain paper through tray 2, but just about anything loaded in tray 1 would show this problem. Plain paper will sometimes print through tray 1, but not very consistently. Our letterhead, which is just one standard weight heavier than our plain paper, consistently jams.

Just for grins I swapped my old fuser back in and the printer went back to working normally, other than the funny spots on the printed output.

This printer does have an envelope feeder on it but historically it hasn't mattered as far as paper handling goes--the printer has been pretty good except for the shredded fuser film.

Any suggestions? I put the old fuser back in to hopefully eliminate the transfer roller, pickup roller, etc that I replaced at the same time. Since the printer seems to work normally again I presume I didn't overlook anything simple on that front.

Any suggestions? I'm thinking I may need to try another fuser assembly but I don't want to overlook anything I can do myself. Right now the PT replacement fuser is out of the printer as the old fuser works for envelopes as-is, and they print a fair number of envelopes in the office. They have a 4250 they can send the letters to.

Thanks for any help you guys can offer.

Mark, sorry to hear you had a problem. I'll give you a call and we can send out a replacement. The 4200 fusers with the metal fixing films have been great, they have virtually eliminated the tearing that is so common with the plastic films in that fuser. It sounds like the pressure roller is slipping on the paper when using the manual feed tray, which prints at half-speed. I have seen this happen but it usually goes away within the first 200 pages as the grease gets worked around the inside of the fixing film and heating element.

Sorry to hear about this problem after sleeve replacement. I had a similar experience where the fuser was'nt seated well due to to the LH (looking from back) clip breaking off. Because of the heat, anything plastic does get a little brittle.
