I just did a repair on a laserjet 4p. It was clicking when the paper fed through. It turned out that the d-shaped paper pickup roller shaft broke off and I was getting a paper jam error. I put in a new paper pickup assembly as I couldn't just buy the pickup roller shaft. I turned on the unit and bang, the new paper pickup assembly rotated one time and the d-roller caught on the metal arm of the pickup solenoid lever. The pickup roller shaft cracked off again, just like the original. This time I adjusted the metal arm of the pickup soleniod lever so that the d-feed pickup roller would spin around properly. There is a critical relationship between the roller and the metal arm of the pickup soleniod. So if you have a broken shaft you will know to adjust the pickup soleniod metal arm.
