just purchased epson r265 how do I know if it is made before april 07 as I understand some compatible cartridges will not work on later models.

Sometimes the date is encoded into the serial number. I don't suppose you have the original box this printer came in? It might be printed there as well. Otherwise the only way to know for sure is to read it off the EEPROM chip inside the printer and to do that you'll need the right software.
