canon pixma mp510 ink reset

i have a cartridge that says it cant be recognized

it was printing ok then said low ink (press ok to keep printing)
now it says cant be recognized ????

i wish to refill it and use again,


the Q: does the ink counter render the chip useless and cant be used again on a new generic or refilled.
Basicly is the chip expired/stuffed ??
and i will i have to buy a new original canon cartridge
