Greetings,

I have a LaserJet 5 that is producing black horizontal bars across every page printed. The peculiar thing is that they are always in varying positions and varying thicknesses. Some of the distances between the bars are equivelent. The strange thing is that some of what has been previously printed appears inside the bar.

Here are links to scans of 3 consecutive pages that I printed.

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b29/stfupics/lj5-2.jpg - 149 kb
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b29/stfupics/lj5-3.jpg - 273 kb

In the 2nd black bar of the first image you can see part of the "LaserJet5" from the page header.

Does anyone have any ideas of what would cause this?

Thanks

You may just have a bad toner. and the fuser may be going too.
Clean the transfer roller , replace toner, fuser. If still a problem, the H/V P/S may be bad, or dirty. Remove the tray, and set printer up on it's back.
Two screws, one on the left of the black box, and one recessed on top of it.
You have to pinch it to pull off. Blow it out, and replace.

Thanks for the tip! I cleaned out the printer, replaced the Toner and it prints flawlessly.

Thanks for the quick reply

Sometimes if the drum has been outside of the printer, it will do that because the toner has a shutter and light can get inside there.

Even if the toner has been outside of the printer for at least 15 mins, usually it is best to place it into a dark place like its box while cleaning or repairing the printer.
