Im using a Laserjet 4 connected via LPT1 to a Windows XP Pro machine. Printing works fine in XP. When using command prompt or dos based programs, I am able to print but the printer does not stop after the page is printed. It will continue to print the page until it is physically turned off. There is no issue with what is being printed, just the amount of times it gets printed. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Probably nobody (except for Woodss) uses DOS.
Just what is the command that you are using?

The School District I work for uses a DOS based program for report cards and grade entry. It has the same symptoms whether printing from this program or from "edit".

Try a "cold reset" after you pull the JetDirect.

Power on the printer while holding the ONLINE button. When the display says "08 cold reset" release the button. Let the printer power up completely. Power it off and install the JetDirect.

This is my 'I don't have a clue answer'!

The printer does not have JetDirect. It is just hooked up locally via a parallel cable. Thanks for the responses though.

Um that was a really smart comment you made about me Redcow.
I have stopped using DOS years ago, but I know DOS really well, most of my computers use windows XP pro.
It might be a good idea for teachers to use DOS based computers to run this old program on, or upgrade to a newer version, this is a not a printer repair issue this is a computer problem.

Cold Reset will do nothing.

Issue has been resolved. It was a setting on the printer. On the HP LJ4 within the menu you can set how many copies to print. I changed it from 1, which it was set at to 2 and then back to 1. I can now print from DOS and it doesnt spit out copies until it runs out of paper. Thanks for the help everyone.

Hey Woodss,
A "cold reset" would have reset the copy count.
