HP LaserJet 4000 maintenance reset count anomaly

Via service mode, I reset the maintenance count to 0. However, when I print the config page, the page count also shows up as the maintenance count and the printer continues to show the "perform printer maintenance" message. Service mode still shows the maint count as 0.
What gives?

Power off printer.
Press the left sides of "item" and "value" rocker switches.
Turn on printer.

Thank you, but that did not work -which is why I went into service mode. Apparently, due to differences in formatter boards, the shortcut method does not always work.
