I'm experiencing a problem with a 4200n printer. The printer displays two rows of asterisks and no status lights.

After resetting the printer it will go through the normal post, memory status check 64K then all status lights go blank and the astericks will display no ready indication. Unable to do anything else with printer.

Removed jetdirect restarted and received load file and execute. Pressed the check mark then receive a download file message. Unable to progress any further. Powered off reseated everything and restarted back to the astericks. Help if you can please!!!

Take the formatter out and restart, perform an engine test, post the results here.

Removed formatter, unable to locate engine test switch. Found documentation relating to the right side of printer and referring to a hole the size of paper clip for engine test.

Unsure if I'm looking in the correct area. I've downloaded the adobe manual from HP unable to loacte any references to engine test. Sorry:confused:

Point me in the right direction and I should be okay. Also found references to possible causes that suggest either bad firmware, memory or formatter board.

Thanks a bunch for your assistance.

Sorry I could't paste the picture here.

Engine test page
To verify that the printer engine (all printer components except the formatter, formatter DIMMs,
EIO products, and the stacker or stapler/stacker) is functioning, print an engine test page. Use a
small, non-metallic, pointed object to depress the test-page switch, which is located on the right
side of the printer.
The test page should have a series of vertical lines. The test page will print from the last tray you
printed from. However, if the printer has been turned off and then back on since the most recent
print job, the page will print from tray 2. The printer will continuously print test pages as long as
the test-page switch is depressed. The printer will not print a test page if it is in PowerSave
mode.
Hint A damaged formatter might interfere with the engine test. If the engine test page does not print,
try removing the formatter and performing the engine test again. If the engine test is then
successful, the problem is almost certainly with the formatter, the control panel, or the cable that
connects them.
