Is it possible to get technical training from manufacturers? Or is it acquired in technical schools? I checked Xerox's site and could not find links to technical training. I want to learn how to service our laser printers in-house. Are most service techs self-taught? If not, how does one become an authorized service tech? We also have HP lasers and mixed-bag inkjets.

I did find a few Websites that offered training. $100.00/hour - is that the going rate? They offered 5 hours of training and that doesn't seem sufficient, I would think a course would take at least 5 - 8 hour days, maybe more.

You can learn a lot from service manuals.

I believe that you are required to be an authorized service provider in order to go to a HP or Xerox school. If not then it's big bucks to attend. Actually, most of the training now is done online, but again my company is an authorized service provider.

You can learn on your own, just be careful. Start fixing your friends broken printers. Learn about gears and mechanics- the rest just falls in place.

it depends on the brand of machine you are trying to learn as well. Some manufacturers keep information a carefully guarded secret and others have made information and learning easier.

90% of printer maintenance involves installing maintenance kits .... and maintennace kits are generally fairly easy installations with a good set of directions...

For HP LaserJet printers, PrinterTechs sells maintenance kits and provides easy-to-follow installation instructions on their web site for the "do-it-yourself" tech: http://www.printertechs.com/maintenance-kits.php
