4M+ burning plastic smell and 57.1 service

After a new cartridge and roller kit the 4M worked great for a few months until this morning. I printed a sheet and afterwards immediately got an intense burning plastic smell and error 57.1 service. I looked up the code which stated "fan" but that seems to be working. Any ideas? I have no problem buying a maintnenace kit (fuser) if you experts think it will solve the problem.

On older style printers this is often caused by a bad main motor. (Older style printer being printers with halogen heating elements in the fuser - 4, 4+, 5, 4si, 5si, etc).
