Here is some suggestions:

Pay attendtion to senior technicians because they have more experience
Do not let pride be in your way of learning
Purchase Service Manuals and Hardware Training Videos
Lean how to troubleshoot
Ask as many questions as possible
Purchase printers of diffrent models to sell or use
Use old dead printers to learn from if you can get it to work then its a bonus

The cornerstone of printer repair of my perpective is to know how to troubleshoot, know how to take the printer apart and together again after replacing the faulty part without damage to the printer, therefore learning to disassemble the printer to how its designed to be taken apart.

In my experience disassembling a printer can be hard during the first few servicing attempts.

When I started in 2000 / 2001 I broke a lot of things in a printer in case respects, I didnt had access to parts at that time either, it was my dark ages, at that time I mainly dealt with laserjet series II and III series printers.

It wasnt till a year later I started on the laserjet 4, then now since August 2005 I started learning the later common HP models.

2100, 2200, 4000, 4050 and I feel now that I learnt most about them now, and now I feel confident with the 4200, 4300 series I have not worked on them yet, however it looks very much straight foward.
