I have a HP 2480 MFP and wanted to know if i can plug it into one of my ethernet ports, assign the printer an IP through the admin (in the scope of my private network) and use it this way as opposed to sharing it out from a direct connect to another pc?

thx-

Yes that will work fine. If you got a LCD display on the printer you can change the IP there and just put it above the last address of your network.

I like to stay well above for printers Say mine was 192.168.45.27
i would put my printer 192.168.45.90-99

figured.

We're running a private class C network so i know i can add an IP to the printer but i was going to assign a specific IP and not a range.

1. goto printer admin and add gateway, subnet and fixed IP (192.168.1.99)
2. in XP add printer as IP based printer, specifying priter IP as port and install drivers

if i give a range then perhaps the printer install is by browsing network and using name so when XP prints it just searches by name?

OR did i misunderstand:

"i would put my printer 192.168.45.90-99"
