when I turn on the LJ III (33449A) I get an error on the display "50 service", it does not do anything else.

Oh, come on now. Really! It's the fuser! FUSER!!!!
Throw it away! Parts cost as much a a new printer! If you can find them.

Fusers cost 20 to 50 dollars from places like PartsNowLLC,Depot America, or any place that sells HP parts.If the speed of this printer is acceptable for you, then this printer will run for another decade.However,HP is discontinuing the toner for this machine before the end of the year.then you'll have to buy from a remanufacturer or one of the three or four companies that make new ones.

I re-build these fusers myself, and it's not worth the effort anymore.
Other main parts are hard to find, and too expensive to bother.
Registrations, feed roller, paper pcb, ac power, main drive gear assy.,it never ends.
Get a LJ4\4+ for less than the cost of any of these parts.

I completely agree with MichaelTech, dump the LJ III and get a LJ 4 plus.

can be the fuser, but can also be the AC power supply
