I dug my HP Laserjet 4 Plus out of the closet the other day, and hooked it up to see if it would work. After dusting it off, I hit the magic button, and it turned on. Then, I noticed a burning smell coming from the fan on top. I immediately turned it off and unplugged it. Is there any idea what this could be caused by?

It is most likely that you've got nothing to worry about, it seems to me that it's just the dust that had gathered in the Fuser that is causing the smell, it should go away soon.

OK, I think I will just try that. Thank you very much!

I agree with Brian, its very likely to be dust inside the fuser doing, it or worse still dust can be on the heating element too, the worst that could happen is a fire inside the fuser assembly with the dust, I suggest you should have it professionally cleaned because it can be dangerous.
